A Message from the Dean

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the visitors of the web site of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. And to tell you that there has never been a more exciting time for the school!
We are celebrating 100 Years of USC Engineering, and every year has been better than the one before. Our history is one of constant growth and progress under the leadership of outstanding faculty and remarkable deans. As their successor, I am humbled to follow in their footsteps, and energized by the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
At no time in history has engineering played a more crucial role in shaping society, culture and life itself.
Indeed, the profession is undergoing a fundamental transformation fueled by tremendous technological advances. Information and other technologies have leveled the global playing field. Rising economies worldwide are putting increasing pressures on natural resources, human capital, wages and the environment.
Engineering schools must prepare tomorrow’s engineers to meet these profound changes. At the Viterbi School, our vision and mission are to lead that fundamental transformation. And this objective is being relentlessly pursued by our outstanding faculty, superb students, rich programs, loyal alumni and friends, and our unparalleled array of national research centers in critical technologies.
We aim to operate globally and across the disciplines- thanks to our location and to our home. The University of Southern California is a testament to the dramatic advances that can be made through innovative interdisciplinary work and inventive partnerships that span the globe.
In this website, you will see the rich variety of programs and resources the Viterbi school offers. I invite you to explore it. We welcome the opportunity to display our bright community of faculty, students and staff, and our relentless commitment to excellence in research, education, and service.
Yannis C. Yortsos

Note:
Upon assuming office, Dean Yortsos’s first official act was to send all Viterbi School constituencies a detailed outline of his view and vision for the School. Those interested in reading this longer and more comprehensive message from the dean may click here.
