Information Theorist to Join Ming Hsieh Department

Gerhard Kramer of Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, will be onboard early next year.

June 27, 2008 — Gerhard Kramer will join the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering as a professor of electrical engineering early next year.

Kramer has been with Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, since 2000. His research focuses on information theory, communications theory, iterative decoding and source coding.
 
He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical 
engineering from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB, Canada, in 
1991 and 1992, respectively, and a doctorate of science technology from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1998.

Kramer is a co-recipient of
the IEEE Communications Society 2005 Stephen O. Rice Prize paper
 award and a Bell Laboratories President's Gold Award in 2003.  He also received the ETH Medal from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in 1998.
